The Edo Theater District

 

Until the Edo theater district was moved to Asakusa in 1842, during the Tenpō Reforms, it was in the center of the city, in Sakai-cha and Fukiya-chō (now the Nihonbashi Ningyō-chō neighborhood of Tokyo) and Kobiki-chō (now the eastern Ginza neighborhood).

The popularity of Jōruri inspired the emergence of many amateur participants. In this act we explore the popularity of Jōruri chanting and the long-beloved Mixed Verses on Jōruri, llustrated, which contains many famous Jōruri chants.

Act 3   A Variety of Dances
Visual Delight: A Varied Dance Lineup

 

Hokusai created many depictions of people dancing. Among them, his "sparrow dance" design must have been a popular motif, because it has been used on plates, bowls, decorative hairpins, and other everyday items.
