Founded in Szentendre in 1967, the Hungarian Open Air Museum serves as a national museum and Hungary's largest open-air collection. Spanning nearly 80 hectares, this vast site preserves over 350 authentic buildings that illustrate the rich architectural and cultural diversity of the Carpathian Basin. It features original, relocated and reconstructed buildings spanning the 18th to the early 21th centuries. A miniature railway (2.2 km) - the longest ride in any European museum - transports visitors across the extensive grounds.  Beyond its rural heritage, the new Transylvanian Building Complex elegantly presents the sophistication of urban middle-class architecture, culture and life, reflecting the diverse and multi-ethnic world of Transylvania, all brought to life through compelling, living history interpretations. Our scholarly dedication extends to researching and showcasing the traditions of Hungarians both within the borders, beyond them, and across the global diaspora. As a national institution, we lead the professional training of museum specialists and operate a dedicated directorate that provides vital support to heritage houses and historic house museums across the region. Furthermore, we are managing the national tasks related to UNESCO intangible cultural heritage, which allows us to maintain an extensive and vibrant professional network throughout the Carpathian area. Through these multifaceted responsibilities, we ensure the safeguarding of our collective traditions with unwavering dedication. Ultimately, our work remains a steadfast beacon for those who wish to cherish and understand the profound, enduring spirit of Hungarian culture.
